Week 17

http://articles.cnn.com/2011-05-04/entertainment/lindsay.lohan.theft_1_district-attorney-danette-meyers-jail-time-felony-grand-theft?_s=PM:SHOWBIZ

Lindsey Lohan's punishment for stealing the necklace has been shrunk to 14 days in jail or in home confinement. She has been cast in the upcoming film, "Gotti," but if she doensn't get her act together, her acting career may be introuble. Do you think Lindsey's jail sentence should have been reduced to 14 days verses the original 30 days in jail? Do you think she should be recast in the upcoming film as another punishment for her missconduct?

I think Lindsey's sentence should have gone for the whole term because she is a human being too, just with a famous name. She should get the same treatment and justice as everyone else who commits a federal offence. She should also be recast in the film because it will act as a further punishment instead of a reward.

Week 16

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_bin_laden

The article talks about the squad who raided and killed Osama bin Laden. It goes into detail about how they trained for years to execute this mission perfectly and without flaw. This invasion was not only a historic moment for Americans, but also a risky and honorable feet that the NAVY SEALs preformed. After they found out that Osama bin Laden was finally taken out, many Americans decided to celebrate his death. The article states, "Whether that matters to most Americans, gratified if not joyful that bin Laden is dead, is an open question." Do you think people were right to celebrate bin Laden's death as excessively as they did? Why or why not?

I think that they were right to a certain extent. To celebrate because he is no longer a threat is right, but to celebrate the death of anyone, despite the evil they have done is morally wrong. I understand that he killed many Americans when he ordered terrorists to crash the planes into the Twin Towers, but stooping to his level by celebrating death is being, in a sense, just like him. Because he is no longer a threat, though, does not mean that other threats will not pop up. This was just the beginning. The war that has been going on for almost a decade is just beginning.

Week 15

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110428/ap_on_re_us/us_severe_weather_90

As of today, at least 269 people are dead because of the devastating tornadoes that have swept through the South. Jerry Stewart said, "It happened so fast it was unbelievable. They said the storm was in Tuscaloosa and it would be here in 15 minutes. And before I knew it, it was here." Obama is going to be visiting Alabama to analyse the damage done by the tornadoes, and he is also going to come up with ways that the rest of the country can help. The National Weather Service's Storm Prediction Center in Oklahoma said it received 137 tornado reports into Wednesday night. Do you think that if a better warnign system had been used, more lives could have been saved? What are some ways Obama could come up with in order to help out the people in the South?

I think there should have been a warning issued earlier to the citizens of the South. This could have saved more lives if the word could have gotten out sooner. Like what Jerry Stewart said, I do not think it was acceptable for people to be notified that a tornado will be reaching them in 15 minutes because they will not have enough time to react. I think Obama could set up charities so that donations of money, clothes, food, etc. can be sent down to the South in order to help those who now have nothing. The president could also set up small organizations of people to go over there and help clean up the debris and possibly begin to rebuild. He could aslo set up some more emergency shelters for people to go to when a tornado is about to hit.

Week 14

http://www.thefablife.com/2011-04-19/demi-lovato-leaves-sonny-with-a-chance-discusses-cutting-on-2020/

Demi Lovato has decided to leave her hit Disney television show, 'Sonny With A Chance.' She suffers from a bipolar disorder and she has recently admitted to cutting herself. Lovato has checked herself into rehab after she went on a talk show discussing her emotional instabilities. Demi Lovato has said that she needs to take a break from acting. She has admitted that she was "compulsively overeating" at 8 and cutting herself by 11. She has said that she was mearly matching the outside with the inside.

I am glad Demi Lovato has decided to quit her television show. She stared on 'Barney' when she was 8, so all of this publicity has been the cause of her emotional unstability. I think that she may return to acting after she learns of alternative ways of dealing with her emotional problems, but I do not think she will be returning any time soon. I believe that she may council other children and teenagers by writing a book, or speaking at schools nation wide so that they will get the message that self infliction is not, by any means, the right way to handle emotional problems.

Week 13

http://www.indystar.com/article/20110417/LOCAL18/104170400/1001/NEWS

This article is about the Race For The Cure celebration that took place in downtown Indianapolis for donations to the research centers for breast cancer. Forty thousand people participated in what marked the twenty year anniversary of the Race For The Cure Foundation. People from all over Indiana participated in the walk to support a loved one or to just donate to the cause. Although the weather was questionable, forty thousand came to support the cause. Many more might have showed up, too, if the weather fortcast would have been a more pleasant one.

In my opinion, this cause is one of the best advertisements to make breast cancer more known throughout the rest of the country. It affects numberous men and women every day, and because it is always a success, research becomes more availiable in the race for finding the cure for breast cancer. This cause not only encourages those who have, have had, or know someone who has breast cancer to stay strong, but to also influence those around them with their life long stories. Many other causes regarding cancer and other illnesses, can also be influenced by the Race For The Cure Foundation, resulting in a greater awareness for other life threatening diseases.

Week 12

http://www.indystar.com/article/20110410/NEWS05/104100389/1001/news

Indiana lawmakers are trying to pass a bill that will ban abortion in the state. They are trying to "make Indiana one of the 'most pro-life states in the country,' according to Republican Representative for Cicero, Eric Turner. Turner has voted for anti-abortion laws since he entered the House twenty-one years ago. He is trying to convince women, like other states have, that abortion can have extreme consequences like infertility and breast cancer. With this view point, along with the amount of votes he received in the House, Turner believes that Indiana could potentially become a pro-life state.

I think this bill may have some potentional, but in regards to society, I can see an uprising occuring if this bill is passed. For quite some time, women have had the right to choose what they would like to do with their child when they are pregnant. Abortion has always been an option to them, but if it is taken away, protests and violence may result. The bill, however, does have great expectations for our state, and could potentially have an effect on the rest of the country. If this bill is passed, many innocent lives may be spared and ignorant actions, like premarrital sex, may also decrease with the passing of this bill. This anit-abortion bill is offering a chance to save many lives, but I do not think its passing will go over well with the rest of society as a whole.

Week 10

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/af_libya
Moammar Gadhafi has declared a "long war" with the allies because United States and European planes bombed Libyan runways at an attempt to stop Gadhafi's protest bombings. Although the main objective of the pilots was to demobalize Gadhafi's airforce, they also destroyed a huge personal compound, and other things they considered a threat. Their main goal was to take down Gadhafi's power levels and basically leave him struggling to gain control of the corrupt nation. One person within the article stated that they believed that Gadhafi will be taken down within two days of these airstrikes.

In my opinion, Gadhafi is a powerful and viscious dictator with more power than the U.S. and Europe know. He has already stated by his violent rampages that he will not go down without a fight. I think it is going to take more than a few arial bombings to snuff this powerhungry dictator. Moammar Gadhafi has declared a "long war" with the United States and Europe, so a long war is what we are facing. I do not think he is bluffing. Gadhafi definately has something up his sleeve, and the UN should do something about it before he releases his wrath upon our nation.

Week 9

http://www.indystar.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=2011103010386

The Senators discussed a bill that banned texting while driving. Though it does limit some cellphone usage behind the wheel, the ban does not prohibit the use of hands-free technology. The ban also limits the use of texting while driving to minors, or drivers younger than 18, and those who break this code will be fined $500.  The Senators are arguing on whether or not the ban will be effective on prohibiting texting while driving.

I do not think that this ban, although in good context, will be effective in prohibiting the issue of texting while driving. The age limit is one concern I have with the bill's effectiveness because morotist under the age of 18 only include the age groups of 16 and 17 year olds. These age groups are not the only ones who text behind the wheel, so the ban should limit everyone to issue of texting behind the wheel. Because this bill does not address hands-free technology, I feel that its effectiveness is, once again, limited. Cell phone usage while driving is considered distracted driving, so the ban should prohibit all cell phone usage, not just texting, and the ban should apply to all age groups, not just to those under 18.
